The airing of The Romanians Are Coming sparked protests as scores of Romanians gathered outside C4 HQ on Sunday, claiming the documentary was biased and featured too many living in squalor.
However, episode one must have evoked sympathy, regardless of political persuasion, particularly for the man (pictured) who wanted to earn money in Britain to pay for his daughter's leg to be treated, which had been aggravated by a rogue Romanian doctor.
The protests happened a few days before episode two, which introduced a Romanian nurse working as a care worker in Sheffield and a car cleaner working in London to keep his family above water.
It also featured a man appearing to turn to crime after losing his job in a warehouse for consuming alcohol on site.
Although some Romanians are angry that we have seen their 'ugly side', the show did go beyond the headlines, including facts like less than 700 are in British prisons and 25% of NHS workers are foreign.
This follows their fictional documentary UKIP: The First 100 Days, which followed an Asian UKIP MP caught up in the imagined chaos of a Nigel Farage government.
The UKIP leader called it "a partisan depiction" of his party.
Channel 4 may have achieved balanced coverage, but probably shouldn't expect too many Christmas cards from Romanians and Eurosceptics.
The third and final episode of The Romanians Are Coming will be shown on Tuesday 3 March at 9pm.
